After spending a considerable amount of time researching, google translating and urban dictionarying, I think it’s safe to say there’s no textbook definition of what a Moulette actually is. However, if the band name is anything to go by, it appears to harbour genre defying sounds which echo relations to the likes of Kate Bush and Pink Floyd.

Eighteen years and four studio albums later, after their initial formation at Glastonbury 2002, the band have inhabited various members and ever-changing musical wavelengths to showcase their avant-garde, constant boundary pushing creativity. And, as a consequence, it comes as no surprise that the band have taken a path into the unknown, with a newly renovated name, now known as Hannah Moule & The Moulettes.
The new project ‘Xenolalia’ pioneers an ingenious collection of 55 pieces of music, all of which encapsulate stories of communication told five ways: Electric, Strings, A Cappella, Horns and Electronica.
‘Xenolalia’ had its first ceremony with ‘Part 1’ of the project last week, leading with electric track Idiolect, a song which explores the depths of human communication and expression, all which additionally tell a tale of each individuals personality, linking to the uniqueness of a fingerprint.
If the general concept of the album and EP releases wasn’t already impressive enough, then I can guarantee the sound will suck you in. Leading electric version of Idiolect is fueled with glitchy yet elegant reverb, which has a tendency conjure thoughts akin to some kind of witchy haven. The track develops into the chorus and is taken over by body moving drumbeats, decorated with delicate orchestration for the pièce de résistance. Of course, if this still somehow isn’t pricking your ears up, then the EP offers alternative versions of the track, you’re bound to find something suited to your personal music preference.
With disruption to their touring schedule, thanks to the dreaded pandemic, Hannah Moule & The Moulettes will be releasing their 55 pieces of music digitally, divided into 11 EPs, released once a month, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled. These will all be available to listen to via streaming platforms such as Spotify and Soundcloud.
